Milton, Helene Insurance Claims Increase

The back-to-back hurricanes that swept across parts of Florida have caused billions in damages, according to the latest insurance estimates.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused billions of dollars in damages across the state with the Tampa Bay and Sarasota-Bradenton areas taking the biggest hits.

The counties with the largest estimated insured losses from both storms are Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Pasco, Sarasota, Lee, Hernando, Charlotte and Orange, according to information from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.

Hurricane Milton damage

As of Monday (Oct. 14), Hillsborough (24,257), Pinellas (16,273), Manatee (12,902), Polk (8,370) and Sarasota (8,341) are the top five out of 20 counties with the most number of claims reported with Hurricane Milton damage.

Other counties with Milton claims include Pasco (7,620), Volusia (6,371) and Lake (5,921).

The total estimated insured losses in Florida for Hurricane Milton were $1,536,495,215 as of Monday. Of the 123,135 claims so far, 101,534 are for residential property damage. The number of claims and estimated losses are expected to increase in the coming weeks. For now:

  • Claims under private flood insurance policies: 640 (most flood policies are through FEMA’s Flood Insurance Program, not private)
  • Claims closed with payments to policyholders: 1,633
  • Claims closed without payments to policyholders: 4,253
  • Commercial property claims: 1,733
  • Percent of claims closed: 4.8%

Hurricane Helene damage

As of Monday (Oct. 14), Pinellas (43,370), Hillsborough (15,339), Pasco (8,748), Manatee (6,832) and Sarasota (6,515) counties are the top five out of 20 counties with the largest number of claims reported in Hurricane Helene

The total estimated insured Florida losses for Hurricane Helene were $1,204,623,844 as of Monday. Of the 117,044 claims so far, 52,725 are for residential property damage. Like Milton, Helene claims and losses will increase in the coming weeks. For now:

  • Claims under private flood insurance policies: 3,550 (most flood policies are through FEMA’s Flood Insurance Program, not private)
  • Claims closed with payments to policyholders: 14,621
  • Claims closed without payments to policyholders: 13,733
  • Commercial property claims: 2,682         
  • Percent of claims closed: 24.2%
