Realtor® Stacy Horst: Finding Hope in Hopelessness
AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – After the death of her daughter due to suicide, Stacy Horst, a Realtor® with Keller Williams Atlantic Partners in Amelia Island, and her husband were determined other families wouldn’t have to endure the grief they did. Her charity, Erin’s Hope and Horst’s remarkable work in the community earned her the prestigious NAR Good Neighbor award, a testament to her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those around her.
The inspiration behind Erin’s Hope came after a heartbreaking loss: the passing of her daughter, Erin, in 2014.
“Four days after Erin’s death, my husband and I found ourselves on her bedroom floor, grappling with our grief. It was in that moment we felt compelled to make a change,” she recalled. They were determined that no other family should endure the isolation that Erin faced during her teenage years, particularly on weekends when social activities were out of reach for her due to her autism.
Erin’s Hope offers a unique club environment where children and young adults with autism can enjoy activities without the pressure of social judgment. “We wanted to create a space where they could have fun and connect with others – no therapy, no parents allowed, just friendships,” Horst said.
The club, which is often described as a mini-Dave & Busters, provides a haven for individuals to unwind and engage in games, sports, and creative pursuits.
One poignant story illustrates the profound impact Erin’s Hope has had on individuals like Sam, a young man who joined the organization when it first opened. “Sam has transformed into an inspiring success story. He has traveled to Austria as an engineering intern and learned to fly, even owning his own plane,” Horst said. Sam’s journey embodies the mission of Erin’s Hope: to provide a supportive environment where young people can thrive, connect, and find their place in the world.
Horst’s commitment to Erin’s Hope goes beyond just founding the organization; she plays an active role in its development and expansion. Since its inception in 2015, the charity has grown to support over 5,000 individuals and is actively pursuing more locations across the country. “Our goal is to have a club in every major metro market, similar to the Boys and Girls Club,” she explained, illustrating her vision of creating inclusive communities for individuals on the spectrum.
Looking ahead, Horst and her team are not only focusing on expanding Erin’s Hope but also providing resources for young adults transitioning into the workforce. “We want to equip them with essential skills, like job applications and interview techniques. The need for these connections is immeasurable,” she said.
The NAR Good Neighbor award reflects Horst’s tireless efforts to bridge gaps in community support for families affected by autism. “Every story we hear of friendship and connection reinforces why we started this journey,” she said.
Celebrating its 25th year, the Good Neighbor Awards spotlight Realtors who are not only experts in their field but also champions of volunteerism. As one of the five winners for this year, Horst will be awarded a $10,000 grant for the charity and be featured in the fall 2024 edition of Realtor Magazine. Her charity was also chosen as one of three Web Choice Favorites and will receive an additional $1,250 bonus donation for Erin’s Hope for Friends.
