Sea Walls Gain Popularity Among Coastal Homes
Luxury homeowners are opting to build private sea walls costing $150,000 or more to protect their coastal homes from erosion and storm damage.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Private sea walls, which can cost $150,000 or more to install, are becoming increasingly popular to protect million-dollar waterfront homes amid the threat of erosion and storm damage.
Sea wall costs are dependent on the width, length and materials used. A wood-framed sea wall filled with soil can cost $150,000, but a concrete wall filled with sand costs more, said David Plummer, CEO of Outback Marine, a Jacksonville-area marine construction company that builds bulkheads, sea walls and more.
Florida's First Coast has become a hotspot for luxury oceanfront home buyers where their money can go further than in other parts of the state. The number of sea wall permits have drastically increased in the last five years. Since 2019, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued 33 permits for private sea walls in St. Johns County.
The desire for a sea wall is dependent on the elevation of the home and client preferences. Homes between Ponte Vedra and Vilano Beach on the A1A are at lower elevations and where many of the permits have been issued.
