Hurricane Flood Claims Top 72,000

Policyholders had received about $894 million from the National Flood Insurance Program due to Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — More than 72,000 Florida policyholders in the National Flood Insurance Program have filed claims because of damage from hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Friday.

Policyholders had received about $894 million from the program. Flood damage is not covered in typical property-insurance policies, resulting in homeowners buying coverage from the federal program.

In parts of the state, homeowners with mortgages are required to carry flood coverage.

Hurricane Debby made landfall in August in Taylor County. It was followed in September by Hurricane Helene, which also made landfall in Taylor County, and in October by Hurricane Milton, which made landfall in Sarasota County.
