‘Hurricane’ Sales Tax Holiday Underway

Now through June 14, Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax holiday provides tax exemptions on disaster preparedness items.

VENICE, Fla. – With hurricane season underway, Florida’s first sales tax holiday of 2024 is taking place. Now through June 14, Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax holiday provides tax exemptions on disaster preparedness items.

Among the items are everything from batteries to generators, along with pet care, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and food storage coolers. To be sales tax exempt, each item must cost at or under the amount listed.

Tax exempt items range from $10 or less to $3,000 or less.

Passed by the Florida Legislature nd signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the tax holiday is held twice this year, once at the beginning of June and again at the end of August. Each tax holiday lasts two weeks, providing Florida residents time to prepare and save on emergency supplies.

“With hurricane season underway, now is the time to get prepared and ensure you have a disaster plan in place,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a Tuesday news release. “I encourage all Floridians to use the sales tax holiday to stock up on the necessary emergency supplies and assemble a disaster preparedness kit.”

Many hardware stores, like Babe’s Hardware of Venice, are back-stocked on emergency supplies for the influx of customers this hurricane season. However, buyers have yet to stock up.

“Last-minute buyers are infamous when it comes to hurricanes,” Nick Roden said. Roden is the marketing director of Babe’s Hardware of Venice.

Roden urges Floridians to get their basic hurricane supplies ahead of time, and the sales tax holiday provides the perfect opportunity.

“It works out well,” sales associate Alex Carpenter said. “You can get everything you need (for hurricane season) without paying the sales tax.”

While there is no certainty a hurricane will occur, it is always important to be prepared.

“Hope for the best, plan for the worst,” Carpenter said.
