Poll: Americans Surprised by Moving Costs
The median cost for a move was about $2,000, and many of the people surveyed said they didn’t budget for it. Experts say to shop around for the best prices.
NEW YORK – More than 50% of Americans who moved in 2023 said they paid more than they expected to move, according to a Clever Real Estate survey.
Of the 2,000 Americans surveyed, 53% said that moving costs were more than expected. The approximate median cost of moving was near $2,000. A third of those surveyed said they didn’t budget correctly for their move.
Those who didn’t hire a moving company still incurred plenty of expenses, including van rental, gas, and packing supplies. Professional moving companies also may have additional charges for stairs and heavy items, and moving companies may want to include tips for employees, according to the study.
To reduce moving expenses, experts recommend shopping around and negotiationg costs and discounts from preferred moving companies. When obtaining a quote, be as accurate as possible about the number of boxes, type of furniture and other bigger items that may need additional packing materials.
