11 Ways to Say No (Without Actually Saying No)

Setting boundaries and saying no shouldn’t be complicated, best-selling author Jay Papasan says. You just need to prepare.

NEW YORK – Keller Williams Realty senior executive and best-selling author Jay Papasan shares tips for declining asks from clients, colleagues and others — without actually saying no.

Real estate professionals must allocate their resources prudently, including their time, but tight scheduling will not always allow them to immediately fulfill a request. While they can move the matter to a back burner, it is important to do so without appearing rude, selfish or uncaring.

One of the simplest responses is to turn down an overture, but to add a sincere apology to soften the blow. Other tactful approaches include putting time blocks on shareable calendars, citing conflicts and emphasizing fairness in honoring previous commitments.

Importantly, strategically turning down an invitation does not have to be a full-on no, according to Papasan. Deferring a decision to a later time or offering an alternative time slot are other options, as is accepting a request as long as your own conditions are met.

Steering the other party to a more appropriate resource or focus are also diplomatic ways to turn down a request that is not a priority.
