Renters Need Flood Insurance Too

While homeowners know flood insurance is a separate type of coverage, many tenants incorrectly think flooding is covered by their renters’ insurance or their landlord.

ORLANDO, Fla. – A standard renters insurance policy mainly covers possessions within the home, with the landlord’s policy covers building damage. However, damage from slowly rising waters – flooding – isn’t part of most renters-insurance policies, and – contrary to what some renters believe – flood damage won’t be covered by their landlord’s policy.

A unit damaged by flooding needs a separate policy issued by a private insurer or the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and most of the renters’ policies are fairly affordable, often as low as $100 per year.
