Meet Your Mentor: A Step-by-Step Guide

A Realtor with little experience can learn a lot if they’re mentored by someone with tons of experience – but how does the former find the latter?

NEW YORK – For a new real estate agent, a mentor is a big deal.

Mentors can be formal or informal. In either case, though, a mentor needs to be someone who is engaged and involved with the mentee – someone who can invest the time and energy needed to guide a new agent through the industry’s labyrinth.

There is really only one important step for new agents who want to be mentored: They have to find a seasoned agent willing to do it.

Agents can look for mentors through a formal program at their brokerage, a real estate coaching service or a professional organization. In most cases, the key is networking and meeting as many expert agents as possible. It can be found through brokerage training opportunities, local investor meetups, associational events, committee memberships or volunteer activities.

Aspiring mentees should also spend time talking with experts about real estate, connecting on social media, and networking with leaders in their market or desired niche.

Important to remember: Mentorship is a two-way street. Those being mentored can give back to their mentor via introductions, referrals, assistance, support and others forms of acknowledgement.

Perhaps the biggest payback comes later – when mentees become seasoned agents and offer to become mentors themselves.
