3 Ways to Break a Home’s Blahs

The curse of too much matching can result in a bland, monotone space that risks becoming quickly forgettable. Add pops of texture color for more pizazz.

CHICAGO — A big lesson emerging in home design is not to get too matchy if you want to make a property stand out.

Matching all the wall colors, wood tones, lighting fixtures and metals could result in a space that feels too much like a blank slate that has no “wow” factor for home buyers.

For example, gray walls paired with gray floors can create a flat, monotone vibe.

Instead, give ‘em something to talk about. Here are some ways to beat the design blahs by mixing it up.

Color pops

Color is one way to add a contrast that can make a space pop. Paint is one easy way to do that – and you needn’t get too bold with the choices; you can still remain in the neutral territory.

For example, for a room with gray floors, walls and even furnishings, try a paint color in a warm white with beige undertones on the walls for a subtle contrast. For a little more hue, try a soft blue or even terracotta to balance out the grays.

If you don’t want to paint, reach for colorful home accessories, flowers (the real stuff), or accent pillows and draped blankets. Try colorful artwork or a rug in jewel tones, such as burgundy, to break up the matchiness.

Added texture

If faced with a singular color as the backdrop for the home, consider bringing in texture for some visual contrast and to create layers to the space. For example, try wooden elements, like a teak coffee table or even wooden ceiling beams. Woven natural fabrics, like rattan kitchen stools, also can offer a contrast.

Metal accents

A house doesn’t have to be done in all chrome, matted black or brass finishes. Mix up the metals to bring attention to certain elements in a home. For example, brass lighting pendants over the kitchen island can make this coveted kitchen spot stand out. (Find more ways to use brass as an accent.)
