1980s Design Trends Making a Comeback
Design styles that include bold colors, neon, patterns, wallpapered ceilings, curved details and cozy, lived-in vibes with modern, vibrant touches are back.
NEW YORK — Design trends from the 1980s are making a comeback, including vibrant and bold styles and colors, as well as a mix of playful, futuristic and luxury pieces. In some cases, homeowners are embracing wallpaper and using it on ceilings.
Neon colors, pastels, wild patterns, and clashing colors are some of the favorites in this return to "maximalism." The style can include bold designs and cozy atmospheres that create a lived-in feel. Wooden hardware is trending for cabinets and other decor, such as stained bookcases and vintage picture frames.
Some homeowners are buying vibrant furniture with patterns or using unique wall and floor designs to provide a new aesthetic to their homes, and this can include textures, bright-colored tiles and other options. Oversized sofas with cleaner lines than in the 1980s are making a comeback, providing homeowners with the comfort they are looking for with lighter-colored upholstery.
Curved, reeded or fluted details in marble, wood, tile and glass is being added to cabinets, furniture and walls to add some character to homes. Wallpaper is not just for walls, with homeowners adding it to the backs of bookcases or ceilings, and designs are no longer just floral.
