HUD Gives $40M Neighborhood Award to Miami-Dade
HUD Secretary says Miami-Dade County shows a “commitment to neighborhood revitalization.” The grant is HUD’s maximum amount for smaller developments.
MIAMI – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded a $40 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation (CNI) Grant to Miami-Dade County to redevelop Cutler Manor in the Goulds suburb of Miami (population 10,994).
HUD Assistant Deputy Secretary for Field Policy and Management Michele Perez announced the award in Miami, part of a cross-country HUD tour to empower local communities to increase the supply of affordable housing through building preservation and innovation.
“I am pleased to see that Miami-Dade County is receiving this Choice Neighborhoods award,” says HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “Miami-Dade County has demonstrated its commitment to neighborhood revitalization, having already undergone a comprehensive local planning effort to redevelop the Cutler Manor and the surrounding Goulds neighborhood. This public investment – which represents the maximum amount for grants targeting smaller housing developments – will give local officials the resources they need to achieve their vision for Goulds.”
“If we want to operationalize equity, we must be bold and courageous, accept local assessments, and invest in those communities that have articulated their choices on how to center the needs of the people, their housing and their neighborhoods,” adds Perez. “This $40 million investment does just that.”
Last week, Fudge announced the awarding of CNI Grants totaling $370 million to eight U.S. communities, including Miami-Dade County.
HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grants help revitalize and transform distressed public and/or assisted housing and neighborhoods across the country. They fund the creation of new mixed-income housing communities, improve economic development opportunities, and support community revitalization efforts that focus on the three areas of “Housing, People, and Neighborhood.”
